Gratitude Jar

Gratitude Jar
Grateful for Change?

At certain times of the year we like to focus on gratitude for life's blessings. This is a good thing. Speaking for myself, I need a reminder sometimes, especially when things are not all sunshine and roses.

Sometimes we hit a wall. Things are going great and then...poof! Something comes along to mess up our plans. Wait, maybe you thrive on spontaneity. You love a curve in the road, a surprise visitor, a change in plans, a burr in the saddle (well, maybe not that one).

Life's surprises are fun for some, shocking for others, but for all, they are a challenge in one way or another. We are forced to stop and pivot, find a new way, look at things differently.

I balk at change - honestly. I like things orderly and expected. Haha, you probably think - she's crazy! Who thinks like that? Well, I do. I'm not saying that change is "bad." It takes me a little while to warm up to change. My first reaction, however, is to shy away and say no way, not now.

Hey, let's get back to gratitude! I didn't forget about the subject of this missive. After going through change or a challenge - when enough time has passed, I have looked back and said, "Wow! That ended up being something positive after all!" Every experience shaped us into who we are today.

Do I like change? Nope! Am I grateful for it? Well, eventually I usually am.

OK, let's rise from the depths and finish up about gratitude.

Gratitude Jar Challenge

A couple years ago I heard about a gratitude jar. Starting in January, you write down what you are grateful for, fold the paper and slip it into the jar. As the year goes along, the jar fills up with little gems of gratitude. On New Year's Eve, you open the jar and read through all the things you were grateful for throughout the year.

This was such a cool idea that I started my own gratitude jar using a ceramic container - 2 years ago! You guessed it, I got it started and then forgot about it. However there are some pieces of paper in that jar and this coming New Year's Eve we'll open that jar and reminisce.

Find a jar (make it a big one) and some slips of paper. Have a pen dedicated to the task. At least once a week, jot down what you are grateful for. Be sure to date the note, fold it up and slip it into the jar. Of course you don't have to limit your notes to one per week.

You can start this challenge any time, it doesn't have to be January!
