Someone recently challenged me to come up with 5 things I do to keep myself motivated. Motivation seems like work! Well, it is for me unless I make the most of my time.
Here are some things I came up with...
1. A big goal can be overwhelming, so I try to break it down into bite-sized pieces. If the smaller goal is easily-achievable, I’m motivated to move on to the next one.

2. I like to get started first thing in the morning – I usually think more clearly then and sometimes I even wake up full of ideas! (Now that’s not every morning!!) In fact, I usually have a little notebook with a pen attached at the ready for when those ideas come along. I can jot them down and go back to sleep knowing they will be there when I'm ready for them. If I had a great idea and forgot it, it really messes with my motivation.
3. I want to be careful with this one because it can work the opposite way – but I like to have a “deadline.” This can help me focus on smaller goals that are needed to get to the big goal. I’m usually pretty self-motivated, but there are certainly times when I need a nudge.
4. If the end result is helping others avoid pitfalls or frustrations that I have experienced, I can usually keep on going even when things get boring or complicated. If I can make things easier for others walking the same path, that’s a big win for me too!
5. Coming up with a reward also helps me stay motivated! It might be some ice cream or extra time listening to a favorite audio book or watching an old movie.
How do you stay motivated? What keeps you going when things get tough?
