Have you ever experienced the loss of a job? - it might be totally unexpected or you knew it was coming. That's not the point, but the question is "what happens now?" My usual modus operandi is to determine my "next step." This principal has guided me these last few years.
If you happen to have the luxury of time, take some of that time to dream, to think of what you would do if you could do anything in the world...now I'm not necessarily talking "vacations" and such, but "occupation." If you could do anything, what would give you the most fulfillment? For me, it's the desire to help/serve others with what I do. Ultimately, that's what matters to me. Of course, I'd like to earn money in the process to meet my financial obligations.
You may be early on in your working career and may not see the need to enjoy what you do for a living. Doing what I enjoyed and helping others in the process was a win-win for me.
Thankfully, I did have a couple of jobs where I felt fulfilled and knew that I had made a difference. At a residential camp I did lots of planning and organizing so it was fulfilling doing my part in prepping for the summer (the main focus of our programs) and then seeing it all come to pass. I so enjoyed talking on the phone with parents (mostly moms) and easing their anxieties about sending their sons to camp, then meeting them in the check in line. I watched the kids flourish while riding horses, sharpening their archery or riflery skills and interacting with counselors and camp mates!
I eventually worked for the company that provided the camp software I used. Helping camp administrators do their jobs better was icing on the cake because I still got my "camp fix" vicariously (once camp is in your blood....)
Don't forget your co-workers, or former co-workers. It's not easy to think you may be losing friends as well as a job. So reach out to them just to listen.
I'm nearing the end of my working days (well, maybe if you go by typical retirement age). Even more so I want to do what I love. Making a difference for others feeds my soul. For me that's usually behind the scenes, helping things run smoothly. But, here I am writing blogs, teaching classes, doing FB Lives...looks like I'm coming out from behind the curtain.
