I wasn’t aware of dry brushing until recently. I also didn’t know much at all about the lymphatic system. What do they have to do with each other?
I won’t go into the entire science of it. I’ll leave that to others (see links below). Our bodies are incredibly amazing and complex. Our lymphatic system is mostly just under the skin. It helps get rid of wastes and toxins. There is drainage from the arm pits, groin and the area near the collar bone. The body dumps toxins into the lymph and the lymph flows toward one of these drainage points and leaves the body. This is all good!
But this system can get sluggish. We may feel tired or see other issues if there is a buildup of lymph. So, it’s important to keep the lymph flowing. Exercise or any type of physical movement is great. But there’s another way to stimulate the lymph – dry brushing.
Some of us may lightly brush the skin to get rid of dead skin and that’s fine. But while you are at it, you can stimulate the lymph too. There are a number of techniques I’ve heard about. Some say to use small circular motions or short brush strokes, others use longer brush strokes. Some say to brush toward the heart, others say to brush toward one of the drainage points (collar bone area, armpit, groin). Whatever your method, it’s a good practice!
I always seem to forget to dry brush before a shower, so I tend to do this at any time when I’m changing clothes. There are many different brush options. This is pretty close to the one I use:
Here’s another option:
You may even have a soft hairbrush that is almost too soft to use on your hair – that may be just perfect!
Here are a couple of videos about dry brushing to check out:
