Waiting Rooms

I never liked waiting rooms. I find them uncomfortable, poorly lit and frankly, boring! Time seems to stand still.

Often when you are waiting, it's for something that's sad or a worry. You are waiting to take a test, waiting for a result, waiting to hear of a loved one's condition. Maybe you are waiting to be interviewed, waiting to get your teeth cleaned, waiting for the tow truck, waiting for the train to go by. Maybe you are waiting for the snow to stop, for the sun to come out, for a friend to call you. Maybe you are waiting for this year to end. Yes, we've all been there are we'll all be there again.

Your waiting room may be in your own home. You may be sitting beside a sick child or spouse, watching them sleep, praying their breathing would ease. You may be in your favorite chair waiting for the phone to ring, waiting for someone to finally walk through the door.

Awhile back I started taking a knitting project with me wherever I went. Usually it was a sock. Having a sock on the needles was great fun - people used to ask me what I was making and their eyes would get very wide when I told them. Some wondered why I didn't just buy my socks. Others wanted to know if I sold them. Some just enjoyed looking at the colorful yarn (I usually had self-striping yarn and it was just so fun to watch the pattern emerge.)

When I'm home, I like to spin - yes, I have a spinning wheel! It's very soothing as you get into a rhythm. It eases my troubled heart.

In life's waiting rooms, having something in my hands, keeping me occupied, is a godsend. Having something to concentrate on might keep me from tearing up when I am emotional. Being creative, accomplishing something - even if it's just one row or round or a few inches - it makes me feel good. Time slips by. It makes the waiting more bearable.

What do you do when you are waiting? What will you do?
